Where to Watch New Year's Eve Fireworks in Rio: Beach, Rooftop or Boat
· 7 min read
There are four realistic ways to watch the New Year’s Eve (Réveillon) fireworks in Rio: on Copacabana beach (free, the biggest show, and the biggest crowd: about 2.6 million people in the last edition, by the city’s count), on the Flamengo waterfront (free, a smaller show and calmer), at a hotel or rooftop party (paid, price set by each venue), or on a private boat off Copacabana. WeBoat’s New Year’s Eve boat leaves Marina da Glória at 9 PM on December 31 and returns at 2 AM, priced per boat for your group only: from R$ 10,000 (WeBoat 32, up to 15 people) to R$ 16,000 (Rio Star 50, up to 22 people), captain and fuel included.

Most guides answer “where to watch the fireworks in Rio” with one word: Copacabana. That is true, but it leaves out the part that matters to a visitor: where exactly you stand, how you get there, and how you get back at 1 AM with millions of people leaving at the same time. This guide compares the options honestly, including the one we sell. If the beach suits your group better, we will say so.

Where are the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Rio?
The main show is in Copacabana, launched from barges anchored along the whole beach. In the last edition (2025/2026), Rio City Hall planned 19 barges and 12 minutes of fireworks there, almost double the previous year.
Copacabana is not the only official point. The same plan had fireworks on the Flamengo waterfront (Aterro do Flamengo, 3 barges, about 10 minutes), at the Penha church in the North Zone (8 minutes) and at Parque Oeste and Parque Realengo in the West Zone (6 minutes each). In Barra da Tijuca and Recreio, hotels and malls ran their own fireworks outside the official program.
The 2026/2027 program was not out yet in early November 2026. The points above are a good guide, but confirm them with Riotur before you plan the night.
Option 1: Copacabana beach (free, biggest show)
This is the classic Réveillon: everyone in white, music on the stages along the sand, and the whole sky lit up at midnight. It costs nothing, and it is the experience most visitors come for.
What to know before you choose it:
- The crowd is the size of a city. Riotur counted about 2.6 million people in Copacabana in the last edition. Getting a spot near the water means arriving hours before midnight.
- Getting there and back is the hard part. The city sets up a special traffic and transport plan for the night (for 2025/2026 it was presented in December). Read the new one before you go and plan your way back to the hotel in advance.
- Your view depends on your spot. Barges sit along the whole beach, so most of the sand has fireworks in front of it. The closer you are to the water, the less there is between you and the show.
Good for: travelers who want the full street party and do not mind crowds. Less good for: families with small children, older relatives, or groups that want to stay together.
Option 2: Aterro do Flamengo (free, smaller show)
The Flamengo waterfront, on Guanabara Bay, had its own fireworks in the last edition, with 3 barges and about 10 minutes of show. It is a smaller show than Copacabana, with a view of Sugarloaf Mountain and the bay.
Good for: visitors staying in Flamengo, Botafogo, Glória or downtown who want fireworks closer to their hotel. Less good for: anyone who came to Rio specifically for “the” Copacabana fireworks.
Option 3: a hotel or rooftop party (paid)
Hotels on the Copacabana seafront and bars and rooftops in the South Zone sell New Year’s Eve parties with a view. They give you a seat, food, drinks and a bathroom, which is a lot on this night.
Prices are set by each venue, change every year and often sell out early, so we do not quote them here. Two questions are worth asking before you buy: does the terrace actually face the beach (a side street view is not the same), and is the ticket only for hotel guests?
Good for: travelers who want comfort on land. Less good for: groups on a tight budget, since tickets are per person.
Option 4: a private boat off Copacabana
From the sea, you watch the fireworks from the front, with the barges between you and the beach and nothing else in the way. Only your group is on board.
How the WeBoat New Year’s Eve trip works:
- 9 PM: boarding at Marina da Glória, next to Santos Dumont Airport, about 15 minutes by car from Copacabana. You arrive by Uber or taxi to the marina, away from the crowd on the Copacabana sand.
- Before midnight: the boat sails through Guanabara Bay, past Sugarloaf Mountain, and anchors off Copacabana.
- Midnight: the fireworks, seen from the water.
- 2 AM: back at the marina.
The water near the barges is controlled by the Port Authority: the area around the barges is closed, only inspected and authorized boats get near the show areas, and in bad weather the Navy can restrict boats heading to Copacabana. If the Navy decides, the route moves inside Guanabara Bay.
How much does a New Year’s Eve boat cost?
The price is per boat for the whole group, not per person, for the night of December 31, 9 PM to 2 AM:
| Boat | Up to | New Year’s Eve, per boat |
|---|---|---|
| WeBoat 32 | 15 people | R$ 10,000 |
| WeBoat Oceanic 36 | 14 people | R$ 10,000 |
| WeBoat 390 | 16 people | R$ 12,000 |
| WeBoat 420 | 18 people | R$ 14,000 |
| WeBoat Rio Star 50 | 22 people | R$ 16,000 |
Prices from the WeBoat API, checked on Nov 4, 2026, in Brazilian reais (R$). Larger boats for 30 to 65 people are on request.
Captain, fuel, Bluetooth sound system, coolers, life jackets and a toilet on board are included. You can bring your own food and drinks (cans or plastic bottles; glass only for white or rosé wine, sparkling wine and spirits; no fireworks on board). Open bar and dinner are booked separately.
Good for: families, groups of friends and anyone who wants the Copacabana fireworks without the crowd and with a simple way home. Less good for: travelers who want the street party on the sand.
