Do You Tip the Boat Crew in Brazil? Tipping on a Rio Boat Trip
Optional, never expected and never on the bill: what American, British and Australian visitors need to know about tipping the crew on a private boat in Rio.
· 5 min read
Tipping the crew on a WeBoat boat trip is optional. On our private boat trips in Rio de Janeiro, a tip is never expected and never added to your bill: the boat price already includes the captain, the crew and the fuel. If your group wants to thank the crew, they will appreciate it. Cash in Brazilian reais at the end of the trip is the simplest way, and the amount is entirely up to you.

Do you tip the boat crew in Brazil?
You don’t have to. On a WeBoat trip, tipping is entirely up to your group. A tip is never expected, and not tipping is perfectly fine.
If the crew made your day and you want to say thanks, a tip is welcome, and the crew will be very happy with it.
Is a tip added to the boat price?
No. WeBoat does not automatically add a crew tip to your quote or balance. The price of a private boat trip is per boat, for the whole group, and it already covers:
- the captain and crew;
- fuel for your route;
- a Bluetooth sound system, coolers, a floating mat and pool noodles;
- life jackets, a toilet on every boat and a freshwater deck shower.
You pay a 50% deposit to secure the date and the balance before boarding. Neither payment includes a tip. Prices for every boat and route are on Prices.
Is there a standard tipping percentage at WeBoat?
No. Tipping is optional, and the amount is entirely up to your group. You don’t need to calculate a percentage of the boat price.
The 10% you may have heard about is a restaurant practice: in Brazil, many restaurants add an optional 10% service charge (“serviço”) to the bill. It does not apply to your boat trip. A tip for the crew is simply a personal thank-you, if you want to give one.
How do you tip the crew on a WeBoat trip?
The simplest way is cash in Brazilian reais (R$), handed to the crew at the end of the trip, when you are back at the marina. A few practical points:
- Bring reais, not dollars: the crew lives in Brazil, so local cash is the easiest for them to use.
- No cash? Ask our team on WhatsApp and they will tell you how to do it.
- Pool it as a group: if your group wants to tip, it is easiest to put it together and have one person hand it over.
- No set amount: there is no standard percentage. Give what feels right to your group, or nothing at all.
You don’t need cash for the trip itself: the deposit and the balance are paid digitally, from your phone. If you want to withdraw reais, there are bank ATMs in the Glória and Flamengo neighborhoods, near Marina da Glória.
Who receives the tip?
The crew on board your boat: the captain and crew who sail with your group for the 5 hours, anchor the boat at the swim stop and help you on and off at the marina.
The crew speaks Portuguese and uses translation apps, and they are used to international guests. A “thank you” goes a long way. In Portuguese it is “obrigado” (if you are a man) or “obrigada” (if you are a woman).
Is tipping different for big groups or special occasions?
No. The rule is the same for a couple, a family, a bachelor or bachelorette party or a corporate group: tipping is optional and up to you. If you do tip, one pooled amount handed over at the end is still the easiest way.
